What is Breast Surgery?

When it comes to Breast Surgery, there is no ‘one-size fits all’ solution. Not only do client motivations vary, but there’s also a significant degree of natural variation between the breasts of each woman.

Plastic Surgery for the Breasts can:

  • Enhance Breast Size, Shape and Projection
  • Restore Breast Volume after Pregnancy, Breastfeeding or Weight Loss
  • Lift the Nipple Position
  • Reduce Areola Size
  • Correct Asymmetries
  • Address Pain and/or Complications

Breast Surgery Recovery.

As with any surgical procedure, healing and recovery periods following Breast Surgery will naturally vary from person to person and procedure to procedure. Your Plastic Surgeon will take the time to discuss your recovery with you during your consultation.

Breast Surgery Risks.

When considering Breast Surgery, it is important to understand that despite choosing a skilled plastic surgeon, receiving care in a premium hospital, and following recovery protocols, all surgical procedures carry risk and complications can still occur. Understanding these risks and taking precautions to minimise them will be key to your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions.

A great decision starts with great questions; so ask us as many as you can to see if Breast Surgery is right for you. To help you get started, here are the answers to questions we’re most commonly asked.

How long will my recovery take after Breast Surgery?

Generally, you’ll be able to return to work within 1 – 2 weeks after Breast Surgery; however, everyone has a different journey (and a different style of work) so your own recovery time may vary.

Car travel should be kept to a minimum for the initial 2 weeks post-surgery, with extra care taken with seatbelts.

As with all aspects of your recovery, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice.

How long after Breast Surgery can exercise again?

After Breast Surgery, it will generally be 8 – 12 weeks before any arm and chest muscle exercises can be reintroduced. However, the length of your recovery may vary depending on your procedure and anatomy.

High impact aerobic activities, running, jumping or jogging should not be resumed before you have completely recovered, as this can drastically affect your surgical results. As with all aspects of your recovery, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice.

Is Breast Surgery painful?

Everyone has a different pain threshold, so it’s not possible to predict exactly how you’ll feel.

Mild, moderate or sometimes even severe discomfort is normal and your pain will generally start to ease after 1-2 weeks.

As with all aspects of your recovery, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on pain management and prescribe medication as required.

How long do breast implants last?

Although it’s a common concern, most women with breast implants breastfeed with little to no concerns at all. The small percentage of women who have come across complications with breastfeeding are generally impacted by the incision site of the implant or the type of surgery they have. It’s important to note that many women with or without breast implants, can have complications when it comes to breastfeeding.

Can I breastfeed after a Breast Augmentation?

This is a common concern but, luckily, most women with breast implants breastfeed with little to no problems at all. The small percentage of women who have experienced complications with breastfeeding are generally impacted by the incision site of the implant, or the type of surgery they have. It’s important to note that even women without implants can have complications when it comes to breastfeeding. Learn more in our blog, ‘Breastfeeding and Breast Surgery’.

How long does Breast Augmentation surgery take?

Around one hour is the standard surgery time for Breast Augmentation. As with all aspects of your journey, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on the timing for your procedure.

When can I start wearing an underwire bra after Breast Surgery?

Generally, an underwire bra should not be worn for the first 8-weeks following surgery, rather you will need to wear a support garment to aid your recovery. As with all aspects of your recovery, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on the garment and timing that’s right for you.

Do I need a support garment after surgery?

Yes, you do. Wearing a post-surgery compression support garment is critical to your recovery. It aids with the management of swelling and healing of your incisions.

How long will I need to be off work after Breast Surgery?

Depending on the type of work, clients generally return to work within 1 – 2 weeks after Breast Surgery. If your job involves strenuous exercise or heavy lifting, this timeframe may be extended. As with all aspects of your Breast procedure, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice and a recovery timeline tailored to suit you.

How long after Breast Surgery can I drive?

Car travel after Breast Surgery should be kept to a minimum for the initial 2 weeks, with extra care taken with seatbelts. As with all aspects of your recovery, your Surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on when you can safely commence driving.
