What You Need To Know About Getting Surgery Ready
Your health is our number one priority at CosMediTour. To ensure your safety, and to help you achieve the best possible outcome, there are a number of very important things you need to do to prepare for your surgery. If you require clarity about any of the items listed below, please don't hesitate to call your Client Manager on 1300 000 633.
YOUR COMPLETE MEDICAL HISTORY
It’s vital that you let us know about all of your medical conditions and medications. No matter how small a condition may seem to you, it’s really important that you tell us about it so that we have a complete picture of your physical and mental health.
For example, you may not think that having minor anxiety is worth mentioning, but it actually is important that we know, so please ensure you consider your past and present health history and be really open with us about it.
Please be aware that in some cases, we may require a medical clearance from your GP or Specialist.
MANDATORY GP REFERRAL
Under medical guidelines, it is essential that you have a valid Medical Referral from a GP or Specialist before you have your surgeon consultation.
A Medical Referral from a GP is valid for 12 months and a referral from a specialist is valid for 3 months.
YOUR SURGEON CONSULTATIONS
Booking your Consultations
Upon confirmation of your surgery details, your Client Manager will provide you with contact details to call your Surgeon's clinic and book your Surgeon consultations.
Under medical guidelines, you are required to have two consultations with your surgeon. At least one of your consultations must be in person, whilst the other can be over the phone or via video if required.
To secure the consultation dates that best work for you, we recommend that you connect with your clinic ASAP.
Medical Referral Requirement
Please note, that it is essential that you have a valid Medical Referral from a GP or Specialist before you have your surgeon consultation. (A Medical Referral from a GP is valid for 12 months and a referral from a specialist is valid for 3 months.)
Be Prepared
To get the most out of your consultation, we encourage you to be well-prepared. Make sure you’ve done adequate research on your procedure and have a list of questions you would like answered. Please also ensure you have your mandatory GP referral, along with any required medical clearances ready to go.
MEDICATIONS & SUPPLEMENTS TO CEASE
There are a range of vitamins, supplements and medications that you must stop taking at least 4 weeks before your surgery.
It’s critical that you stop taking the following mediations 4 weeks prior to your surgery until 2 weeks after your surgery, unless advised otherwise by your Surgeon or General Practitioner.
- Do not take ANY vitamins
- Do not take ANY supplements
- Do not take Nurofen, Nurofen Plus, or any Ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory medication
- Do not take Aspirin, Disprin or Aspro Clear
- Do not take any blood thinning medication. Importantly, if you have been directed by your General Practitioner or a Specialist to take a blood thinning medication, you must advise your Surgeon’s clinic and your General Practitioner before stopping your medication
Please note that failure to stop taking these items may result in your surgery being cancelled.
SMOKING & VAPING
Please note that you must not smoke cigarettes, marijuana or partake in any kind of vaping in the 6 weeks leading up to your surgery and also during your recovery period. Please be aware that your Surgeon may perform a nicotine test and, if present, your surgery may be cancelled. Learn why here.
YOUR SUPPORT PERSON
For your safety, you will be required to have a person to pick you up from hospital after your surgery and to stay with you for at least the next 24 hours.
Please consider who you will nominate as your support person, as you will need to provide their contact details ahead of your surgery.
SURGERY & YOUR WEIGHT
To offer you the best possible outcome, our Surgeons always recommend being your ideal weight prior to surgery.
Please note that your Body Mass Index, or ‘BMI’, must be considered within the healthy-range in order to be accepted for surgery. This is because clients with a BMI considered too high, or too low, have an increased risk of surgical complications. READ MORE +
Maintaining a stable weight is also important because weight loss or weight gain before surgery can impact your surgical recommendation and results. If you are on a weight management journey, it’s important to make your Client Manager aware. Additionally, if you experience a fluctuation in your weight of 5kg or more, please be sure to let us know as soon as possible.
PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING
Pregnancy can affect the outcome of your surgery. Generally, our Surgeons recommend holding off on surgery until you have completed your family. Breastfeeding can also impact your surgery by increasing the risk of infection. Please be aware that you must conclude breastfeeding at least 6 months prior to your surgery.
MAMMOGRAM REQUIREMENTS
If you are 40 or older, please be aware that you will be required to provide a mammogram result that is dated within 6 months of your surgery date.
POST SURGERY SUPPORT GARMENTS
Whilst some procedures include a basic post-surgery support garment, others don’t. We highly recommend purchasing garments before your surgery so that you have spares available. You will find a range of garments available online.
